Chairs and Things

As expected the Wood workshop here at Chelsea College, has witnessed a swelling of student numbers as lots of the FDA Interior Design students come down with their found furniture and start the process of re-appropriation. As always we are intrigued to see how these pieces of furniture will be transformed giving them a new function. Below are some images taken from the past few days.

This group discuss how their two chairs will be joined together.
This group here are experimenting with bending acrylic tubes to be added to their furniture.
Lets hope somewhere isn't missing this Evac chair!
Getting to grips with the upholstery of this chair.
This spindles on the back of this chair already showing the signs of change.
BA Fine Art's Saskia going all 'old school' and carving this wooden block.
Hot wire cutting a detail into this polystyrene foam sandwiched between MDF.
Some time to reflect on this display stand.
Hollow Styrofoam box ready to be covered in concrete effect spray. A lot lighter than the real thing!
Angelo from BA Interior Design, working out the next cut to his folding structure made from Sapeale.
 Much deconstrution later....
A very nice detailed model being glued up with us having had the pieces laser cut.

A manageable model. Lets see what the full size piece looks like.
Styrofoam sections being cut and fixed together to make this column detail.

Halfway

So this term seems to be flying past with us already halfway through. It's been fairly quiet at times but we know that is all going to change as the third years have now handed in their thesis and the design courses are researching prior to them making. There has still been plenty to keep us entertained and below you can see some images from the past few days.

Here the small router is being used to create a some very intricate details.

One of the first groups to join us from FDA Interior Design. More of this coming our way soon.
Tom from BA Fine Art starts on another Sapele hardwood form.
Very soon the donut takes shape.
And finally a little Linseed oil brings it to life.
Phil gets going with a build project designed by the chair of ISD, Ben Kelly, for hoardings to display large posters at CSM, LCC and here at Chelsea.
This might take a little while!

Fine Art's Andrew is a fan of making objects by recycling waste material. Luckily for him we have plenty of that.
Some of the hoardings finished with Phil getting to grips with another one.

Induction time

The start of this week saw the workshops visited by MA Interior Design for their inductions. Spread over two days the four sessions had a much more intimate feel to them as the group sizes were smaller. Ending with the traditional making project they all seemed to enjoy their time with us. Below are some images taken from the sessions.

Weng is in there somewhere showing the group what is possible with a Pillar Drill
John demonstrates to the students how to use our lovely old Wadkin Band Saw
Weng, once again, captivating an audience with tales of the Pillar drill and occasionally, Chinese culture.

As always Phil gets hands on in describing how the Router works
The final alterations are made to the pieces in the hope that they fit together perfectly.

One:Place:Ten

Well it's that time of year again. Some snow flurries on the hills, the race for the Premiere League hots up and the Cook House Gallery, here at Chelsea College, plays host once again to the staff exhibition.
The third running of this event saw us all celebrating the fact that the Millbank site has now been our home for past ten years. It's lovely to see, once again, such a diverse and interesting range of work highlighting the extent of the talented staff we have here at the college. Below are some images taken from the show.
