It's Interior Design Time.

The last week of January was a frenzy of activity as many student's worked to their project deadlines. The most prominent of these, with us in the Wood Workshop, were Interior and Spatial Design 1st years. As a whole the project proved to be a very successful with many of the groups working well together to build their pieces ready to take on site to Greenwich. Below are some images taken during the past week.

The project was about windows, openings and apertures. 

The project also required groups to record or film. This vacuum formed mould was to keep a camera water proof.

We saw lots of good team work. 'Many hands'

The assembly room had a great buzz about it.

Good things come in small packages.

It's been a great start to the year with a flurry of making happening with us in the Wood Workshop. Not least down in Small Works where Stef has been overseeing the construction of a number of architectural models. It is such a fabulous environment to be in when we see such diversity in motion. Details small objects sharing a space with grand pieces. Below are some images of the making in Small Works taking place.

This delicate structure required a steady hand to glue the two sections together. 

This architectural model nears completion as trees are 'planted' to give it a sense of reality.

Removable walls allow for a camera to get inside and create some interesting images. 

Some of the second year Interior Design students have been working on some projects using acrylic. Here the body of the piece gets glued together. 

Here plastic tubes are pushed through two layers of acrylic. These will become drainage tubes for melting ice on top. 

This model is utilising the plastic material Styrene. It's easy to cut and glue and allows for some very lovely detailed models to be made. 

This model shows how different thicknesses of MDF can be used to achieve the various levels that might be required in a project.

What better way to shake off those new year hangovers and excessive festive waistlines than a healthy dose of BA Interior Design student joining us for some induction fun. We hit the ground running with some intensive sessions that culminate in a small making project that really gets the students hands on to the equipment that we have here in the Wood Workshop. Below are some images taken during their two days with us.

We started by demonstrating various machines and processes. Here John shows them how to use a Jigsaw.

In the middle of this group Weng reveals all about the Pillar Drill.

After the demos....the project. Pairs of students each with the task of cutting shapes that will fit together to the best of their ability. This gets each pair using several of our key pieces of equipment such as the Bandsaw, Pillar Drill and Sanders.

A bold attempt here at some accurate Fret sawing.

Its a good opportunity to watch and observe whilst others give it a go.

These pieces appear to be coming together nicely.

Next its off to file and then fit. 

The first of the completed pairs then gets to nail gun the work to a board.

The last few pairs get their projects pinned down.

Christmas countdown.

Well its been a very relaxed few days with a handful of students in with us. Its been lovely to see some of the Graduate Diploma ISD students in starting to make final models as well as the usual mix of Art and Design being made. In what was the last week of the BA term , below are a few images taken in the Wood Workshop.
